How I’ve Benefited From Biking in Chicago

If you asked what my most important purchase of 2020 was, I’d immediately say my bike and go into a long spill about all of the benefits of biking.

Acquiring a bike wasn’t easy. Everyone wanted one simultaneously; therefore, bicycle shops and online suppliers were out or had long backlogs. I gave up on those and decided to pursue one on OfferUp or Craigslist. However, each time I’d get a lead, the bike would sell before I’d get there.

I’m so happy that I didn’t give up because I finally snagged an oldie but goodie from Craigslist.

She needed a bit of TLC and demand backed up the bicycle repair shops. But, I was able to get her back after ten days. I can’t fully explain how happy my two wheels have made me! Here are a few ways that cycling has helped me!

1. HEALTHY BENEFITS OF BIKING

Woman standing next to bike

I’ve never been one to spend a tremendous amount of time in the gym. I’d prefer being tricked into exercising through fun activities, lol. Cycling is so much fun, and I can ride for hours!

I’ve noticed how the inches are melting away, and I’m not mad about it. Besides that, my stamina and energy levels are up, and I’m getting lots of Vitamin D! It’s also good for my heart, lungs, and I’ve gained muscle from all the burn!

2. CYCLING IS A FAMILY AFFAIR

My adoration for biking in Chicago rubbed off on my husband so much that he decided to get a bike. We were able to find him a bike before me, which was kind of annoying, lol. But I’m so happy that he purchased one.

My son and I commute to work together on our bikes and do night rides around the city. As a family, we spend a lot of time exploring and getting in our workouts together. It brings me tremendous joy!

3. Enjoy Nature and Fresh Air While Biking

Being outside in nature, breathing fresh air is the most beautiful feeling! I’ve learned that it’s hard for me to be angry or upset when surrounded by natural beauty. It gives perspective and reminds me of how small I am in the grand scheme of things.

South view of the skyline from the Lakefront Bike Path

Chicago’s lakefront is a magnificent gem free for everyone to enjoy, and I’m very grateful for it. You not only get stunning views, but there are many trees along the trail and spots for resting, relaxation, and picnics. The peaceful energy and calm infused are therapeutic, and the reminders of things to be grateful for are soothing.

4. Cycling Gives Social Interaction

Social interaction is another benefit of biking. This year has been tough with not being able to see many people. I missed the interchange. When walking to work, I’d only pass a handful of individuals, which was the weirdest feeling.

Hitting the bike trails gave me social interaction. Although we were quickly passing by, I welcomed the smiles and waves. I was just happy to see other people out and about feeling good!

5. Biking Reduces Stress and Anxiety

To describe this year as heavy would be an understatement! Everywhere I turn, there’s something ready to cause disruption and worry. Living in downtown Chicago put me smack dab in the middle of tense and chaotic scenes. You can’t live through them and not be affected.

I suffered from anxiety attacks in the past years and overcame them with much effort. However, I’m still prone to stress and worry and must consciously work through things to avoid falling into old patterns. Biking helps me break up those bricks of anxiety that I’m inclined to carry. I imagine demolishing burdens with each stroke of my pedal. It works!

6. Discover New Places While Cycling

Blue Bike resting against a colorful mural
Love Mural 2471 N. Clark Lincoln Park

Bicycling is the best way to explore Chicago, in my opinion. I’ll frequently spot cool murals or historical places that I’d usually miss if I’m in a vehicle. I’ve also discovered many small mom and pop restaurants with incredible food in neighborhoods I’ve explored. Being on a bike also allows me to cover multiple communities in shorter periods.

7. Positive Mindset from Biking

Each time I hop on my bike, I get a mental exercise session! I unpack my thoughts and feelings on things and work through them. The solitude enables me to tune out the noise, reflect, meditate on things, and be in tune with myself.

Too many individuals are trying to sway our thinking in one way or another. There’s mounting pressure to align with opinions. Regularly working within myself helps me have a greater sense of self and not allow the negativity surrounding me to change who I am as a person.

Besides, it helps me to have a healthy view of other people’s beliefs and opinions. I often walk away with more empathy and compassion for others. Many times, positive thoughts pop into my mind that I can carry in my day-to-day interactions with others on social media and real life.

8. Biking Brings out Creativity

Chicago Lakefront

When my mind isn’t cluttered, and I’m chill, creativity follows. Sometimes I have to pull to the side and take notes of different thoughts and ideas that come to mind.

9. Biking Creates Opportunities to Meet New People

A few of my awesome neighbors

Cycling in groups is so much fun and helps keep me accountable during my lazy days. One of my neighbors organized a few community bike rides, and it resulted in me meeting some pretty cool people in my apartment building. I’ve also joined a biking club, and the experience has been incredible!

group of women standing by bicycles

We regularly do 20-mile bike rides through the city, and it is so much fun! My favorites are the night rides through the city. I’m always in awe of the incredible bikes people have! Some are super decked out!

These are just a few biking benefits I’ve noticed. I plan to continue riding throughout the winter; wish me luck, lol!

Night Ride Ready

Some may get these benefits from other things. The important thing is to discover what works for you and assists you with navigating stressful situations. What has helped you keep a positive mindset? Let me know in the comments.

Bike Safety Tips

  • Always wear a helmet
  • Obey the traffic laws
  • Watch for pedestrians
  • Don’t ride on the sidewalks
  • Use the bike lane where available; when there’s no bike lane, ride in the right lane or shoulder
  • Use hand signals
  • Ride in the direction of traffic
  • Stay in your lane
  • Keep alert

The Forge: Lemont Quarries Outdoor Adventure Park

The Forge Lemont Quarries Outdoor Adventure Park is one of the best things to come out of 2020, and I’m super excited about it! The 300-acre park located 22 miles outside of downtown Chicago, boasts the largest adventure course in North America. It’s everything an outdoor thrill-seeker could want and more! My son Donovan and I were so impressed during our visit!

The Forge Lemont Quarries Activities

The Forge is an amusement park for outdoor enthusiasts, and there’s no shortage of activities. Young and old alike can expect a full day of open-air fun! Kiddos ages 3 to 13 will love the Two Towers Adventure for kids; it has over 30 fun elements.

Also, there’s an aerial challenge course, four over-water ziplines, mountain biking skills courses and pump tracks, flatwater paddlesports including kayaking, canoeing, and pedal boats, rock climbing zone, tactical laser tag, outdoor escape experiences, five miles of running, biking and walking trails.

The Eight Tower Adventure is the showpiece of The Forge Lemont Quarries Adventure Park and the activity that Donovan and I decided to conquer.

The 10-acre adventure course has five stand-alone “Hex Towers,” interconnected by 2 miles of ziplines, multiple rappelling stations, and 299 high ropes course elements spread across 15 aerial adventure trails. The Hex Towers connect to the three tallest climbing, rappelling, and ziplining towers in the United States: East X Tower, West X Tower, and Skyscraper Tower!

Skyscraper Tower

The Skyscraper Tower is over 120 feet high and has 56 rope course elements. I have to be straight. My nerves had me close to chickening out on this course. Once I decided that I was doing it, my nervous energy became excitement!

However, what I imagined as my ability to tackle this tower and what transpired were world’s apart, lol. It took us over two hours to make it to the top of the Skyscraper Tower. How an individual can tackle all eight in a day is beyond me! There were times when I thought of taking a more comfortable alternative, namely when faced with the rock climbing wall, but I pushed through. My son was even impressed. The rewards were epic views throughout the experience. There were moments during the climb when I’d make sure to pause to enjoy the peace and stunning views.

Once we reached the top, we took the zipline across the water! I let out all kinds of screams, lol! It was awesome! You can also rappel down from the top. We did that too!

The dream and vision of The Forge go back to my childhood. I grew up in Colorado in the mountains climbing, biking, and doing adventure sports. I wanted to bring those authentic outdoor activities to this part of the country.

After you work up an appetite grab a bite at The Foundry –an on-the-go market with healthy food options. We enjoyed a hearty lunch, and I’m happy to report that the food was just as impressive as the views.

Open daily; the chef-curated, locally-sourced menu includes a selection of healthy sandwiches and wraps, parfaits, green and grain salads, pasta salads, and more, including a variety of vegetarian-friendly options. Additionally, the open-air concept serves a full line-up of beverages, including On The Ropes, an exclusive craft Kolsch Lager created in collaboration with Lemont’s own Pollyanna Brewery.

The Forge Safety

Before engaging in the tower adventure, we signed waivers and received extensive training instructions and demonstrations. We even had practice sessions with our equipment. I felt confident proceeding afterward. There was also an attendant readily available for assistance on the tower.

Final Thoughts

In a time when outdoor activities are the preferred choice for so many, The Forge is the obvious choice! Take advantage of this new addition to the Midwest! I can’t wait to return! My son’s been talking about getting a job there ever since our visit. Too bad we live in the city, and he doesn’t have a car, lol.

P.S-If you’re able to get through the 8 Tower Adventure in a day, you’re super human and I want to know who you are! Mad Props!!!

Chicago Staycation Ideas: Be a Tourist in Your City

Man and woman wearing masks while on Chicago tour

Along with the rest of the world, we’ve made significant adjustments and cancellations to plans this year. However, even with our big ideas and travel being off the table, we realize that there’s no need to cancel 2020!

So, we shifted focus to quick road trips close to home, being tourists in our beautiful city, and staycations! Adapting has resulted in much-needed refreshment and escapes from the craziness.

Multiple conversations within the family have centered around balancing activities outside of the home with remaining cautious during the pandemic. So we decided that patio dining and outdoor recreation will make up most of our entertainment for the foreseeable future. Fortunately, Chicago offers plenty of both!

Playing tourists in our city is nothing new. However, my appreciation for everything the city has to offer is more significant than ever!

Chicago presents endless options for designing a staycation. More importantly, businesses have stepped up to the plate implementing procedures for public safety, so we felt confident venturing out.

Saturday Itinerary

Chicago Architecture Center

We began our Saturday exploring the Chicago Architecture Center, a nonprofit cultural organization whose mission is to inspire people to discover why design matters.

Miniature building exhibit on display at Chicago Architecture Center Tour

There are two levels of exhibits focusing on Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods, housing types, leading architects, future projects, and includes the largest scale model of the city. It was a great prelude to our afternoon walking tour.

Must See Chicago Walking Tour

After exploring the center, we assembled for the Chicago Architectural Foundation’s Must-See Chicago Walking Tour, a fast-paced 90-minute stroll featuring some of Chicago’s most famous buildings, including the Wrigley Building, the Art Institute of Chicago, Willis (Sears tower forever to Chicagoans), and the Chicago Theatre.

Carbide & Carbon Building: Art Deco Architectural Style

One of my favorite activities is admiring architecture while walking downtown. This tour heightened my appreciation for the magnificent architecture in the city. We learned how to identify various architectural styles, and I’ve been strolling around being a know-it-all ever since, lol! There are so many things hidden in plain sight around Chicago. The buildings that I pass every day I now see differently. I realized that I don’t stop and look up enough, and I’ve missed out on so many details. Dave and I loved the content of this tour!

The group max was 6 individuals and required masks for the duration. Our guide was also alert to ensuring everyone kept a social distance. The Chicago Architecture Center offers over 50 different walking tours! Wear comfortable shoes for this activity.

Dinner at Virtue in Hyde Park

We headed to Hyde Park for dinner at Virtue Saturday evening. It was our first visit to the Southern American restaurant from Chef Erick Williams. Both Dave and I felt the cuisine was outstanding. We indulged in mac n cheese, fried green tomatoes, shrimp with grits, cauliflower steak, gumbo, and key lime pie. I don’t regret one calorie, I’ve already created a list of our friends and family to bring back!

Also noteworthy was the warm and hospitable service; overall excellent dining experience!

Sunday

Absolutely Chicago Segway Tour

I’ve low-key wanted to do a Segway tour for years but never followed through, so I was looking forward to this tour. It did not disappoint! I smiled and laughed throughout and commented several times to Dave how much fun I was having. Absorbing the scenic beauty of Chicago on Segway was a real treat!

Tour guide explaining Buckingham Fountain during Chicago tour

We did Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours’ newest adventure ‘The Chicago Insider,’ which covers the good, the bad, the ugly, and totally weird stories of Chicago.

The 2-hour fun fest incorporated a variety of scenes and interesting facts about the city. Tour Guide Jen was loads of fun and kept us engaged throughout! I’d do this again in a heartbeat. Absolutely Chicago Segway Tours offers several different tour themes. An absolute MUST!

Architecture River Tour

Our weekend of tours continued with the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady Cruises. This 90-minute cruise is Chicago’s number 1 tour, according to TripAdvisor. It lived up to accolades. There’s nothing like gazing up at Chicago’s legendary architecture while floating in between the buildings. It was magical!

Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise

The docents from the Chicago Architecture Foundation are passionate about architecture, making all of the difference with their tours. The Chicago River Tour should be on everyone’s bucket list! It was the perfect way to cap off our weekend!

I briefly wondered if three tours during the weekend would become monotonous. However, it was far from it. Each offered a varied perspective and insight. Dave and I couldn’t decide which was our favorite as we appreciated something from each experience! I feel you can’t go wrong with either and would even recommend all three in a weekend as we did.

In Conclusion

Our staycation weekend was much needed and a reminder of why we fell in love with Chicago. Restarting activities outside of our home after the phase reopenings had me a bit nervous initially, so I’m grateful for the health and safety measures businesses put into place. We felt comfortable all weekend. There’s plenty to do around Chicago while remaining precautious and social distancing.

Hopefully, you’ll be inspired to take advantage of this time to be a tourist in your city and plan a staycation!

My weekend staycation itinerary was hosted by Choose Chicago, however, all opinions are my own.

Hamilton County Indiana Getaway Weekend

More and more individuals are opting for road trips over flying these days, and I am here for it. I have always been a strong advocate for the road trip. All I need are a few of my favorite people and a great playlist!

Coffee is a road trip essential

Road trips offer excellent opportunities to explore off the beaten path and discover new things in your backyard that may have been previously overlooked.

The Midwest has an abundance of cool travel destinations; my latest discovery is Hamilton County, Indiana!

I have driven through Hamilton County multiple times during road trips to Indianapolis and beyond. But, I had no idea about the beautiful gem that I repeatedly passed through!

Hamilton County, Indiana

Carmel, Indiana

Named after Alexander Hamilton, Hamilton County is about 30 minutes north of Indianapolis, Indiana. Its largest cities consist of Carmel, Noblesville, Fishers, and Westfield. The county as a whole and cities within have received numerous national accolades, including:

  • 2018 Best Small Cities for Biking in the U.S. by People For Bikes (Carmel)
  • 2018: 9 Best Food & Drink Trails in the U.S. by Trips to Discover (Hamilton County)

  • 2019: 50 Best Food Towns in America by The Daily Meal (Carmel)
  • 2019: Safest Cities in America by Neighborhood Scout (Carmel, Fishers, Westfield)

A drive from Chicago with a 6:30 a.m. start time put us at our first stop in Carmel around 9:00 a.m. central time.

Within the cities of Hamilton County, visitors will find public art and galleries, hiking and bike trails, unique local shops, incredible food, museums, and lots of nature and outdoor activities such as golfing, kayaking, and boating. My husband and I agreed that we could have spent a few extra days because there was so much more that we wanted to see but ran out of time. Another trip is definitely in our future.

We began with brunch at The Cake Bake Shop by Gwendolynn Rogers. Let me just say that you don’t want to miss this fairy-tale experience! As soon as I gazed upon the exterior, I knew that I was in for a treat! As I entered and peered around, the word magical came to mind. Every inch of the decor is stunning, and the cakes are exquisite! We were also extremely impressed with the service, food, and cocktails! I had the best quiche of my life here (Sun-Dried Tomato, Basil, and Feta.)

My friends know that I prefer pie over cake, so when I told them that I’d drive back to The Cake Bake Shop just for another slice of the blueberry lemon cake, they knew it slapped! The Cake Bake Shop is on my list for whenever I return to Hamilton County. Maybe next time, I’ll try their Afternoon Tea. Walk ins are welcome but reservations are recommended.

Bath Junkie is only a few steps away from The Cake Bake Shop. Stop in to create your own bath and body products. Select your product, choose your fragrance and color, and they’ll mix it for you. It was hard settling on a scent because there’s a plethora to choose from. The staff were very knowledgeable regarding which scents worked well together and patient with mixing according to my liking.

I ended up creating a bath oil with an acai and bamboo scent, and I love it! Dave created a cologne consisting of woodlands, chocolate & sage, sweet grass, and cedar.

We didn’t let the rainfall prevent us from exploring this beautiful garden park.

Entry through a Japanese arch led to a colorful tranquil garden featuring a large koi pond, flowers, and seating to take in the peaceful surroundings. Also, there’s, a covered picnic area with tables.

The small park was inspired by representatives of Carmel’s Sister City, Kawachinagano, Osaka, Japan.

Urban Vines Winery & Brewery is Westfield’s first winery and second brewery. The 5-acre property includes a tasting room, brewery, outdoor patio, and meadow overlooking the pond and vineyard. The rain subsided in time for us to enjoy a lovely afternoon of wine, sun, and conversation. My cousin, who lives in the area, met up with us at the vineyard. It felt good seeing family again! There’s plenty of space to spread out and get comfy here. There’s also live music in the evenings.

Grindstone Public House

Saturday evening we dined at Grindstone Public House, a locally owned restaurant, in the charming historic town of Noblesville. Grindstone Public House is located in the historic Castor building built in 1891 by William H. Castor, a local farmer, and entrepreneur. The restaurant specializes in American fare.

I ordered the fish & chips (I substituted the chips for mashed potatoes), and it did not disappoint! Ordering fish at restaurants is always a risk, in my opinion. I was delighted with this dish; the fish was perfectly cooked and flavorful throughout while the batter was light. The Stuffed’ Shrooms appetizer was also ahhhhmmmazzzzzingggg! On another note, I was intrigued to see a fried bologna sandwich on the menu, which was my go-to as a kid! Next time, lol.

We ended our evening with a stroll around downtown Fishers and beer flights at Four Day Ray Brewing. However, I think their Monk Sweat put some hair on my chest! It definitely made me sweat!

Sunday began with brunch at Eggshell Bistro, a globally inspired award-winning restaurant from Chef Larry Hanes. We shared the Truffled Egg Tartine: sous-vide poached hen’s egg, roasted asparagus, truffle oil, preserved lemon, watercress, bottarga, and fontina and the Shakshuka: Moroccan-spiced tomato base, habanera, onion, garlic, kale, chèvre, zhoug, baked hen’s egg, grilled baguette.

My taste buds went nuts when I bit into the Truffled Egg Tartine; as a result, I had to talk myself out of ordering a second serving. The flavor combination was outstanding! The Shakshuka had incredible taste and spice. It came with a grilled baguette that was out of this world. Food and Wine Magazine named Eggshell Bistro the best breakfast in Indiana; well, they certainly won’t get any argument from me. Don’t miss this spot!

Books & Brews

Our final stop before heading home was at Books & Brews.

We love books. We love beer. We love people. At Books & Brews we’re passionate about disconnecting people from technology and reconnecting them with each other.

Books & Brews

It was love at first sight when Dave and I walked into this place. There’s a bookstore selling gently used books in front and a bar selling craft beer named after books in the back. We tried some of the Nancy Brew and couldn’t leave without a 6 pack to enjoy at home. I can’t wait to return so that I can spend more time here.

Guests are encouraged to arrive early and unwind with a cocktail or two before dinner. The lounge area features beautiful velvet furniture, which is quite comfortable. The atmosphere and lighting set the tone for a fun and relaxing evening.

When I’d received the invitation to preview Sushi Suite 202, I thought it was a fresh and unique concept. However, the experience and execution went far beyond what I’d imagined.

Sushi Suite 202

The Chef guided us through an exciting food journey while subtly educating us. It was dinner and a show as we observed his graceful preparation of the sushi.

The fresh, high-quality fish flown in from Japan, New Zealand, and Mexico was incredible. Sushi Suite 202 was my first omakase experience. Dave and I had a fantastic time, therefore, it won’t be my last!

Sushi Suite 202 is open for dinner service Monday through Sunday (Sun-Thur, 5 p.m-11:15 p.m, Fri-Sat 5 p.m.-1 a.m.). It’s a fabulous choice for a special night out in the city. I can’t recommend it enough!

Hotel Lincoln

After dinner, stick around to hang out at Hotel Lincoln. The boutique hotel has a great vibe. There’s a rooftop bar with views of Lake Michigan and downtown Chicago, a restaurant, and a coffee shop inside the property. In addition, the hotel is dog-friendly!

I appreciate the thoughtful consideration given to various dietary restrictions. The menu offers vegan, vegetarian, as well as gluten-free choices. Finding tasty gluten-free options while dining out can be a real challenge.

Gluten-free bread is made at the restaurant and can substitute for any sandwich. It’s also good to know that a gluten-free dessert option is always available. Bonus!

Other important things to know include they use locally grown, cage-free eggs, in-season local produce, local honey, and whatever other ingredients they can source in our region. David and Lisa are passionate about only providing the best for their diners. Therefore, they scrutinize all food sources. You won’t find any corn syrup, nitrates, nitrites, artificial ingredients, and colors here.

Their standards shine through in the dishes, which are consistently excellent. Sometimes restaurants can be hit or miss, and you never know what to expect from one experience to the next. Third Coast Spice Café is reliable and one of the best Chesterton, Indiana restaurants.

Another favorite, the build-your-own bison burger. Local Indiana bison patty, caramelized onion, shredded lettuce, and tomatoes on a pretzel bun. It’s a solid burger. Bison is naturally lower in fat, calories, and cholesterol than beef, and there’s no gamey taste. There are over 20 toppings that you can choose from to top the burger, so be creative.

Don’t even get me started on their salads and savory chili!
I could go on and on in this post, you get the idea.

Riley’s Railhouse Bed and Breakfast located in the heart of downtown Chesterton is the perfect location for your next stay while visiting the Indiana Dunes National Park.  It’s within walking distance of shopping, restaurants, two wineries, and minutes away from the Indiana Dunes National Park, beaches. The South Shore Train Station, which takes you right into downtown Chicago is also nearby.

Besides, the uniqueness of the Bed & Breakfast makes it an enjoyable and memorable experience.

History

The building, constructed in 1914 by the New York Central Railway, is situated on the Norfolk Southern double mainline and once served as a freight station.

Extensive labor has gone into restoration and renovations while preserving as much as possible.

Riley's Railhouse Bed and Breakfast Lounge Bar

The main lounge displays antiques, railroad memorabilia, art, and the original, functioning freight scaled once used in the train depot. The building is large, but the Rileys have made it comfortable and welcoming. A kitchen in the middle of the lounge serves as a gathering space as well as the bar.

Riley’s Railhouse Bed and Breakfast Accommodations

Two rooms in the depot serve as guest rooms.  The lower berth sleeps up to two, and the upper berth sleeps up to 5.  The upper berth also has a balcony for train enthusiasts to step onto for a view of the passing trains on the Norfolk railway.  Up to 90 trains pass each day.

No need to worry about excessive train noise.  The installation of triple-pane soundproof windows greatly diminishes the sound.  I was amazed at how much they cut down on it as I watched one train pass with the windows shut.

Outside of the depot sits renovated vintage railway Boxcars that serve as guest quarters. Much attention has been given to detail in the beautifully decorated, warm, cozy spaces. The New York Central Boxcar has two guest rooms that each sleeps up to 4.

My family and I stayed in the renovated New York Central Boxcar recently. The mattress, as well as the bedding, was very comfortable.  I slept like a baby!

The next morning we enjoyed delicious breakfast and lovely conversation with the owners and other guests in the lounge.

The warmth and hospitality shown to us made it difficult to pack up and leave.

Memorable Experience

You don’t have to be a train enthusiast to stay at Riley’s Railhouse Bed & Breakfast. Beach visitors stay at the Railhouse too. Many guests who weren’t necessarily fans of the railroad upon arrival have departed with a new appreciation for the importance of the railroad in history. Mr. Riley’s knowledge of the virtues of the railroad and the history of the building, coupled with his enthusiasm, prompts you to want to learn more! His love of trains started with his father’s hobby of purchasing and restoring railroad lanterns. There are some on display in the restored depot.

There’s no other space like Riley’s Railhouse Bed and Breakfast in the area. This place is a gem!

Hopefully, you’ll check it out for yourself!

Exploring Southwest Michigan’s Wine Trail with Grape and Grain Tours

Time is precious, and we should use it doing things that leave us feeling happy. As this picture exhibits, wine makes me happy!!!

Free Run Cellars

My expression is an accurate description of my Southwest Michigan Wine tour day excursion with Grape and Grain Tours. It was a joyous time! This scenic destination, also known as the Napa of the Midwest, is only an hour and a half drive from Chicago, shorter than many people’s commutes.

Southwest Michigan

A Southwest Michigan wine tour is ideal for day trips, vacations, or carefree weekend getaways. The destination is home to over 15 breweries and 21 wineries, with many providing foodie events, entertainment, live music, and festivals. The scene is continually changing and offers a welcome shift in pace and setting. If you’re not yet hip to this fabulous wine destination, you must get in on this secret! And, if you’re thinking, “Michigan only produces sweet wine,” think again. Check out what area vineyards like Dablon Vineyards in Baroda, Michigan, is doing.

Sandy beach at Lake Michigan
Lake Michigan

The region’s proximity to Lake Michigan enables the grapes to benefit from a “lake effect,” protecting the vines during winter and spring while facilitating a longer growing season. The growing conditions are ideal for varietals found in warmer climates, so you’ll find the dry reds and whites that your heart desires.

Although I’ve visited often, my outing with Grape and Grain tours spoiled me rotten and has me re-thinking future visits. You may, by all means, create your itinerary as I have in the past. However, there are obvious benefits to allowing an experienced tour company to take the reigns for you. Namely:

  • Probably most important; your tour guide is the designated driver; therefore everyone in your group can enjoy a full experience
  • No stress or worries. When someone else does all the planning, the only thing you need to do is relax, drink wine, and have fun.
  • Tour guides are knowledgeable of the area and provide useful insight and information. My goal is to always learn something new from each of my experiences.
  • Our tour guide looked out for us, kept track of all of the purchases, and stored them on the bus because let’s face it; we were all drinking.

Grape and Grain Tours

I received a complimentary Southwest Michigan wine tour for myself and a guest in exchange for sharing my experience. However, all opinions are my own.

Grape and Grain tours far exceeded my expectations! The family-owned company, owned by mother and daughter, Kim and Ashley, was established in 2013. As Michigan natives, they have a deep sense of pride and an in-depth knowledge of the wineries they’ve observed prosper. Their desire to showcase the best while providing a first-rate and fun experience could be felt throughout the day. I can’t say enough about my time on this tour; I like the way they do business. During the trip, Kim popped in to greet us; she’s the sweetest.

Tour guide Tami

Tour guide Tami was friendly and personable as well; if you can request her, do it! Because Grape and Grain Tours thought of everything, I was able to relax and enjoy the moments fully. I haven’t melted into that level of unwinding in a long time.

I appreciated that Tami was attentive while allowing us space; there wasn’t any hovering. She was masterful with time, and I never felt hurried. Each stop had just the right amount of time, so there was no sense of feeling the need to move on. She kept us right on schedule down to our arrival time back in Chicago.

Southwest Michigan Wine Tour Transportation and Itinerary

Grape and Grains Tours have multiple pick-up and drop-off locations for you and your party. They’re flexible and will tailor to your needs. Our pick-up spot was a local Chicago Starbucks, which was perfect because I can’t start my Saturday without coffee. We departed Chicago at 8:00 a.m (9:00 a.m Michigan time) En route, Tami gave us the facts and history of Michigan’s wine production, specifically the wineries of Berrien County. We also had a bit of trivia. Knowing the history of the area heightened my anticipation and enhanced the experience.

Tabor Hill Winery and Restaurant

First stop on our Southwest Michigan Wine Tour was Tabor Hill, one of Michigan’s oldest wineries. The beloved award-winning winery was the first winery in Michigan to specialize in vinifera wines. Vitis vinifera is a common European grape cultivated in many varieties, such as Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. We had a good range of dry whites and reds for selection, as well as semi-dry, sparkling, and fruit wines. I stuck mostly to the dry-reds and whites.

Tabor Hill Winery

Tami informed us that Tabor Hill’s Classic Demi-sec and Classic Demi-Red have been staples at the White House since the 1970s. Of course, I had to try them. They were excellent! So much so, I purchased a bottle to take home! Who’d have thought I’d buy a semi-dry to take back over a dry. I surprisingly didn’t find them overly sweet.

Lunch at Tabor Hill Restaurant

We took a tour of the wine cellars before heading to the restaurant for lunch and more wine. The restaurant’s wall of windows enabled us to soak in views of the vineyards while dining. I had the chicken schnitzel, and it was incredible! This winery is for sure on the return list, and the chicken schnitzel will be on repeat. Hopefully, I’ll be able to participate in one of their vineyard tours, the grounds are beautiful!

Free Run Cellars

After lunch, we headed to our second stop, Free Run Cellars. The small-batch winery sits on 3 acres of vineyards. If you’re desiring a smaller intimate setting for your tasting, this is the winery for you. The winery has a lovely outdoor patio overlooking a pond as well as the vineyard. I’d love to return in the warmer months to enjoy a glass in the tranquil surroundings.

The staff guided us through a selection of 3 tastings of reds and whites.

I really liked their mulled wine and purchased a few of their mulling spices for at-home use. Whenever Fall hits, I’m all about mulled wines.

Round Barn Estate

Large Amish Barn at Round Barn Estate on the Southwest Michigan Winery Trail
Round Barn Estate

The final stop of our tasting tour was Round Barn Estate, named after the attractive turn-of-the-century Amish barn sitting on the grounds.

Tami, our guide referred to this well-know spot as the party place. I agree. They host a variety of events throughout the year. I’ve had some fun times at this estate. I’ve been a fan of this trifecta for a while. Therefore, I mixed things up with tastings of beer and spirits in addition to wine. I knew that I wasn’t leaving without a bottle of their Black Walnut Cream, it’s phenomenal!

It was the perfect way to end our tour. Thank goodness the bus was waiting, and no one had to worry about driving home. Half the bus fell asleep on the way home, lol — another perk of letting someone else manage the details while you handle the fun.

Thinking back on that joyous day still brings a smile to my face! Did I mention I only knew a couple of the ladies on our tour? Nothing like getting to know others over wine. So don’t worry if it’s only you and a friend or just yourself on tour, you may make a new friend amongst a group of strangers!

Would I book a trip with Grape and Grain Tours again? Absolutely!

Have you ever visited Southwest Michigan Wine Country? Which wineries are your favorites? Tell me in the comments.

Ragnarok Axe Throwing; Nonstop Fun

I grew up in the country and can count on one hand the number of times I’ve handled an ax. My dad used to chop firewood to heat our home, but my job was stacking. So obviously, I never imagined myself throwing axes for entertainment. However, here I am at Ragnarok Axe Throwing, tapping into my inner Viking along with my family and friends.

Well, there’s a first time for everything; it won’t be my last either because, believe me when I say it was SO MUCH FUN! I credit this incredibly hilarious time to a healthy mix of our fun group and our engaging host Deanna!

Fierce Competition

Ragnarok Axe Throwing is all about customer experience, so if you’re down for a crazy and adventurous outing with your crew, this is the place for you! Warning, this post is riddled with ax puns!

Ragnarok Axe Throwing is located in Chicago’s South Loop on the fourth floor of the Fine Arts Building at 410 S. Michigan Ave. The new Viking-themed range, aptly-titled “Asgard,” features spectacular views of Buckingham Fountain and Lake Michigan.

None in our group had prior ax-perience. In other words, we had no idea what we were in for; there understandably was some apprehension, namely, are we CRAZY and well ARE WE CRAZY!!! Our group chat was a mix of excitement and terrifying memes!!! Also, the session booked was to be an hour and a half, and I mostly wondered if the activity would keep our group’s attention for that long.

Axe throwing competitors with Noric name tags at Ragnarok Axe Throwing
Donovan’s name pun needed lots of explaining

The ax-perience began upon entry into the range room. Our “axepert,” Deanna greeted us and immediately tasked the group with creating Noric inspired individual and team names; ax puns were highly encouraged.

Our “axe”pert then gave us the 411 on safety, correct posture, and technique for throwing our axes. As a result, safety reservations were quickly put to rest.

Let the Games Begin

We divided into teams, and the competitive games began! What ensued was an afternoon of high energy competition, hysterical laughter, and lots of smack talk. Surprisingly, Deanna engaged with us the whole time. She created multiple games pitting us in fierce competition with each other, and she was also an excellent hype person. We also developed a few skills within a short amount of time.

I hadn’t laughed this hard in a while. The session flew by, and I was disappointed as it came to a close. Time does fly when you’re having fun! We’d gone through several competitions followed by crowning and stamping the winners. I’ll just put it out there that I was on the winning team!

Ax throwing is definitely something that I will do again, who knows, maybe I’ll end up on a league.

I received a complimentary session for myself and a group of friends, however, the summary of my experience is genuine and my own. I highly recommend Ragnarok Axe Throwing for an unforgettable time. Click here for other fun things to do in Chicago!

White Castle Turkey Stuffing

White Castle Turkey Stuffing Recipe

Who knew that White Castle sliders made an excellent stuffing! I had no idea until a few weeks ago but discovered through conversation with others that the recipe has been around a long time. Word on the street is this creative twist on stuffing was born years ago when a White Castle employee wanting to enhance her grandmother’s stuffing added White Castle Burgers. This recipe is easy and straightforward; therefore, perfect for me!

White Castle sliders turkey stuffing
White Castle Sliders

I’ve always shied away from making stuffing for large family gatherings in the past, usually leaving it to the older and experienced who have it down to a science. In my family, the stuffing is the co-star of the meal. Therefore, whoever stepped up to task better be sure their stuffing or dressing is up to snuff. While purchasing the ingredients for this recipe, the grandmotherly type at the check-out inquired if I was making stuffing as she scanned my items. I replied, “yes,” she then proceeded to tell me how much sage she uses and warned me not to use too much, lol. See, serious business!

I think that I’m ready to throw my hat into the ring with this easy White Castle Stuffing recipe. It’s delicious and family-approved; the whole pan was devoured so give it a try!

Saugatuck, Michigan Weekend Getaway: Food, Activities, Shopping

A two-hour ride from Chicago along the Lake Michigan coast sits the charming town of Saugatuck, Michigan. Named in the top 10 of Best Coastal Small Towns in 2019 by USA Today, Saugatuck is buzzing with gorgeous art galleries, fantastic eateries, eclectic shops, and beautiful beaches. Also, there’s an assortment of quaint Bed & Breakfasts and boutique hotels to enjoy a cozy and relaxing stay.  It was the perfect destination for our recent quick-getaway away from the city.

The 2-hour drive on a Friday from Chicago put us in town around 1 p.m. Check-in at our Airbnb was 4 p.m., so we had a few hours for exploring and eating.

Lunch at Farmhouse Deli-Douglas

Our first stop was at The Farmhouse Deli & Pantry, in Douglas, sister city to Saugatuck. We often bounced between the two towns during our visit.

The Farmhouse Deli

The smells permeating the air heightened the anticipation, and the food did not disappoint! The Farmhouse Deli & Pantry serves cold and hot sandwiches, soups, and salads featuring locally sourced cheeses and meats. Some of their meats are smoked in-house. We were both pretty hungry when we stopped in. I had my heart set on a sandwich but changed my tune once I sampled the chili. Dave had the vegan Bahn-Mi, which was equally delicious. We both were happy with the decision to pop in here.

I sampled many of the deli items and ended up purchasing a pint of smoked salmon jerky and Korean meatballs for me to snack on later. There’s an excellent selection of packaged and jarred gourmet foods for purchasing. This place is incredible, and I highly recommend stopping in during a visit to the area.

Saugatuck Antique Pavillion

Probably the most organized antique mall I’ve ever visited, making browsing easy and enjoyable. Also, I was pleasantly surprised upon entry as I noticed that it didn’t have the smell of most antique shops. With over 175 dealers in a 24,000 square foot space, you’re bound to find something you don’t need but want, lol.

Next door to the Antique Pavillion is Saugatuck Brewing Company, which naturally was our next stop!

Saugatuck Brewing Co.

The 24,000 square foot brewery has 16 taps of rotating mainstays, seasonals, and a variety of specialty styles that range from Barrel-Aged Imperial Stouts to Sessionable IPAs and hard cider. We started in the pub with a few beers along with the drunken hummus and house-made potato chips and onion dip. The appetizers were delicious and just enough to hold us over till dinner.

In addition to the pub, they have a barrel room with 15 beers on tap, bumper pool, shuffleboard, darts, pinball, and live music. We ended up coming back later in the evening to hear live music in the barrel room.

The town carries a variety of Bed and Breakfasts, Inns, and Rentals. We decided on a cute cottage rented through Airbnb.   It was clean, well-stocked, and gave the best beach vibes. Rob, the owner, was great with communication, making check-in seamless. I’d stay here again.

We attempted dining at Phil’s Bar & Grill in downtown Saugatuck. However, there was a 70-minute wait. As a result, we wound up at Everyday People Cafe in downtown Douglas. I couldn’t have been more pleased with our choice. The sophisticated space served incredible food along with superb service.

Dave and I started off sharing the Asian Caesar Salad, one bite in, I immediately regretted offering to share. I can’t even describe how amazing this salad was. It created an explosion of delightful flavors so incredible that I had to refrain from ordering a second salad since I also had an entree coming. I’d drive to Douglas, MI from Chicago just for another go at that salad!

Start your Saturday with breakfast at Blue Star Cafe in Douglas, a no-frills retro diner with reasonable prices and friendly service. There’s also an ice-cream parlor attached. The restaurant is small and cozy. The server told my friend and me that we looked like we needed coffee, lol, took a liking to her immediately. I loved my omelet and home fries. Great local spot!

Saugatuck Dune Rides Tour Guide Frosty

I highly recommend a tour of the dunes with Saugatuck Dune Rides during your stay! If possible, try to get Frosty as your guide. He’s skilled at fast-paced winding through the dunes and quite knowledgeable of the history of the dunes.

I’m ashamed to admit that even though I grew up about 20 miles from Saugatuck, I’d never heard about the lost town of Singapore. It’s Michigan’s Most Famous Ghost Town buried beneath the dunes! This once bustling town aided in the rebuilding after the Great Chicago Fire and subsequently disappeared, entirely covered by the sand drifts from Lake Michigan in a matter of 4-years! This tour is a can’t miss activity.

Saugatuck, Michigan Art Galleries and Shops

There are over 30 art galleries in the area along with scores of trendy boutiques and shops with unique finds to pop into around town. So many one-of-a-kind items!

James Conner Gallery

I had a pleasant conversation with James Conner at his gallery about the small Midwest towns where we grew up. Mr. Conner is well known for his colorful montages of American cities and universities. His galleries feature original oils and watercolors, art prints, inspirational art, historical engravings, handcrafted gifts of wood, glass, and pottery.

Good Goods

A stunning display of handmade American Art occupies this multi-level gallery. There were so many pieces to marvel at; everything from fine art, jewelry, glass, sculptures, to woodwork and soaps. Take your time here.

Urban Found

Reasonably priced hand-selected jewelry, clothing, industrial home decor, candles, and other cool Boho-Chic finds. I ended up purchasing several pairs of earrings.

Mitten Brewing Company

After working up an appetite from all of the walking and shopping stop in at Mitten Brewing Company for a beer and pizza, they serve some of the yummiest pizza I’ve ever had! The beer is incredible too. Their creative selection of pizzas like the Westerdog ( Chili bean sauce, all-beef franks, Colby-Jack cheese, diced white onions, shredded kosher pickles, ketchup, yellow mustard) will keep you coming back for more. Can’t decide on one; can get a pizza flight! Man, I love this place!

Sunday Breakfast

Cranes Restaurant & Pie Pantry

Before heading home, stop in at Cranes Restaurant & Winery for breakfast and an apple crisp to take back. If you visit during the apple-picking season, that’s a bonus. There are lots of activities for families there. You can easily spend the whole day!

Windmill Restaurant

Another breakfast option before heading home is Windmill restaurant in downtown Holland, about 15 minutes from Saugatuck. They dish-out delicious home-style breakfast all day! We try to stop in whenever we’re in the area. You have to order the Bird’s Nest!

I hope that this post inspires you to visit Saugatuck! I’m already making a list of activities and restaurants for our next trip. Which other Midwest towns should I visit? Let me know in the comments.

5 Reasons Why You Should Do a Chicago Food Tour

Chicago, a city known for its gorgeous skyline, breathtaking architecture, museums, sports, and my favorite pastime, FOOD!

Do Rite Donuts

Where does one looking to immerse themselves in the city’s food scene begin when the options are endless? There are numerous ways to go about it. However, I’ve found one of the best and easiest is through a food tour. Each time I’ve joined one, I walked away impressed, and joyful from what I experienced. My most recent outing was the Gateway to West Loop food tour with Chicago Food Planet! Founded in 2006, Chicago Food Planet is the city’s longest-running food tour company. To say it was an afternoon well spent is an understatement. I recommend it to anyone desiring an unforgettable afternoon in one of Chicago’s diverse neighborhoods. Here’s why:

TASTE A VARIETY OF FOOD

Bonci’s Margherita Pizza

Let’s be real; the number one reason to do a Chicago Food Tour is that Chicago’s food is iconic. A food tour allows the opportunity to taste a variety of the city’s excellent offerings. The portions are the perfect size for getting a good taste without overdoing it. The tour made six stops. We indulged in sampling everything from local artisan handmade donuts to a typical Roman street food snack.

Discover Gems You May Have Otherwise Overlooked

A week before my tour I’d walked past Cemitas Puebla in the West Loop. I was curious as I glanced inside and wondered why’d I never noticed it before. I got super enthused after our guide, Mark, informed us that it was the second stop on our tour. My discovery of Cemitas, the sandwiches of Puebla, Mexico, did not leave me disappointed. The homemade bun, similar to brioche, is sweet with sesame seeds. Stuffed inside was flavorful chicken, avocado, and Oaxaca cheese. I topped mine with the chipotle and Verde sauce, and it was heaven! I had no idea how famous this sandwich was in Chicago!

While strolling the neighborhood, our guide also spoke on some of the other restaurants, not on our tour. There are just too many great eateries in the West Loop to contain within a 2 1/2 hour tour! Therefore, I left with a long list of award-winning, Michelin rated, Top Chef eateries to check out in the future.

Get to Know the People Behind the Food

Inspiring stories of the locals behind the food creates feelings of connection and heightens appreciation for what’s in front of you. For instance, just knowing John Ross, owner of Formento’s loved his Nonna and named his restaurant after her makes you go awwww. Throughout his restaurant are many special touches in homage to her from the menu to pictures on the wall. As a child, he loved spending Sundays with her while she cooked all day for the evening meal and the gathering of his large family. Desiring to recreate that feeling in his restaurant, he incorporated long booths to push tables together for family-style meals and conversation.

It stirred up some of my favorite memories in my ma-ma and pa-pa’s kitchen. It seemed like they were always cooking and wanting to feed us. Once I became an adult, I realized how much joy feeding us bought them. Now, whenever I eat one of Nonna’s (Italian for grandma) meatballs at Formento’s those feelings will return. The narratives about the business owners, their home countries, and families were some of my favorite moments from the day. If you didn’t notice things like this tug at my heartstrings.

Education About Chicago Neighborhoods

Chicago Food Planet Tour Guide

Having a professional tour guide share details about the people, historical facts, businesses, and architecture of a neighborhood leaves an impression and awareness of the progression of the city. The tour took us through the many changes of the West Loop; from a working-class residential neighborhood, meatpacking district, manufacturing, Chicago’s Skid Rowe, to dining mecca. We learned of many key people and developments that contributed to what you see today.

Become Acquainted with People from All over the World

Food tours are an excellent way to meet new people! Our group was a mix of individuals from Missouri, New York, Oregon, England, Chicago, and suburbs. You know what they say; “people who love food are always the best people.” Everyone was in a great mood and excited to share a meal with you. Donovan and I had lots of laughs and great conversations with different individuals. The memories will linger long after the tour is complete!

So, as you can see, I’m an advocate for Chicago Food Tours. I was offered a complimentary tour for a guest and me by Chicago Food Planet. However, all opinions here are my own. This tour was my second with Chicago Food Planet. My husband and I took their flagship Bucktown/Wicker Park tour in 2012 for our anniversary. And we still fondly recall it as one of our favorite anniversary outings.

Chicago’s Skyline: Best Places for Viewing

I’m sure you’ve seen numerous pictures of the Chicago Skyline in your social media feeds.  Many may think that these pictures are mostly from tourists but a large portion of them are from locals too.  As a local it’s something that I never tire of.  The skyline is beautiful and each time it comes into sight there’s a certain energy and excitement that infuses me and it hasn’t dulled over time.

Chicago’s skyline is ranked as one of the worlds tallest and most magnificent.  It’s one of the reasons that over 57 million tourists flocked to Chicago in 2018, setting a record!  It should be ogled again and again!

With and abundance of rooftop bars and patios where should you settle in to take in the Chicago Skyline and other views?  Here’s a list of my favorite spots in the Chicago.

Chicago Riverwalk

Chicago Riverwalk

The Chicago Riverwalk spans 1.25 miles so there are many great spots to soak in the city whether it’s taking a stroll or relaxing at one of the many bars or eateries along the river.  There’s no shortage of activity with live music, Art on the Mart, and boaters and kayaks passing by.  The Riverwalk is open daily from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Cindy’s Rooftop Restaurant

Sitting on the top floor of the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel, Cindy’s Rooftop restaurant and terrace has one of the most enviable views of Chicago with Lake Michigan as a backdrop against Millennium Park.  The panoramic views from the terrace are unmatched.  While one may come for the scenery, you’ll stay for the creative cocktails and food.  Beverage Curator David Morr knows his stuff!  Pro Tip:  make a reservation, this is one of the hottest spots in Chicago!

Aire Chicago

Nestled in the center of The Loop amid skyscrapers, Aire Rooftop Bar on top of the Hyatt Centric gives a magnificent perspective of Chicago’s architecture.  The rooftop bar also curate’s monthly art series featuring local artists for you to enjoy while chilling with cocktails and friends.

Offshore at Navy Pier

At 36,000 square feet, Offshore, holds the Guinness World Record for the largest rooftop deck in the world!  The all-seasons/all-weather spot at Navy Pier delivers extraordinary sights of Lake Michigan and the Chicago Skyline.  There’s plenty of space for visitors to take in different angles of the beautiful city. You’ll want to linger for awhile.

Museum Campus

Lakefront Trail at Museum Campus

Museum Campus, home to three of the city’s most notable museums, is southeast of downtown. The Lakefront Trail winding through Museum Campus has numerous spots for gazing.  I love hitting the Campus early in the morning to reflect and appreciate the scenery.

Patio at Cafe Brauer

The Patio sits just south of the main zoo grounds at Café Brauer, a historic Prairie School-style landmark. Overlooking the pond at Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo, the Patio at Café Brauer offers an exceptional observation of Chicago’s skyline and it’s dog-friendly.

London House Hotel

I was blown away the first time I enjoyed the sweeping views of Chicago from the top of London House Hotel. This spot allows you to observe activities on the Chicago River, bustling Michigan Avenue, and Lake Michigan. The night scenes are amazing too!

Located in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, the Robey Hotel is the tallest building for miles. The Up Room lounge and terrace on 13th floor delivers an incredibly sexy view of the cityscape. It’s the perfect spot for date night or maybe even an evening with the girls!

360 Chicago

Positioned on the 94th floor of the iconic John Hancock building, 1,000 feet above Michigan Avenue; the observation deck offers stunning 360-degree views of the city’s famous Skyline and scenic Lake Michigan to guests the moment they step off the elevator.  On a clear day, individuals can see as many as four states and as far as 55 miles. In addition, guests can also learn facts about Chicago neighborhoods and architecture through 18 stations of interactive touchscreens and info kiosks. Or take a TILT over the edge of the building, 1,000 feet above The Magnificent Mile

North Avenue Beach

The popular North Avenue Beach is one of my favorite spots for relaxation and people watching.  There’s an abundance of fun activities to engage in with the beautiful skyline as a backdrop.

VU Rooftop Bar

This 13,000 square foot rooftop oasis next to McCormick place in Chicago’s South Loop is a welcome addition in an area where rooftop bars are lacking. With Chef driven fare, fancy cocktails, and TV’s on the outdoor deck, what more could you ask for?

I can’t get enough of the views of this beautiful city, it’s truly a work of art! Where’s your favorite place to soak it in? Let me know in the comments.

New Buffalo, Michigan: Where to Eat, Shop, and Drink

A change of pace and scenery is good for the soul and the Midwest presents numerous opportunities to change things up. Many aren’t able to take frequent vacations or weekends away. A daycation is an excellent alternative. There’s no shortage of cute towns surrounding Lake Michigan, and often they’re only a short drive or train ride away. I decided to try AMTRAK for the first time for a daycation in New Buffalo, MI. In only an hour and 15 minutes, I was in the beach town. The ride was quick and easy. I left Chicago from Union Station on a Friday morning train at 7:20 and arrived in New Buffalo, Michigan at 8:37 a.m., 9:37 Michigan (Eastern) time. Also, my ticket there was only $12!

New Buffalo, Michigan is a small town located on the shores of Lake Michigan
at the mouth of the Galien River. It’s one of my favorites places for exploring. The area offers friendly locals, breweries, restaurants, wineries, beaches, and lots of shopping opportunities.

The AMTRAK drops you off right downtown within walking distance of plenty of shops and restaurants. There’s also Taxis available for the places a bit outside of downtown.

Luisa’s Cafe

My friends met me downtown, and our first stop was for breakfast at Luisa’s, a small family run cafe serving delicious food made with fresh, natural, and simple ingredients. Additionally, the family owns the attached Harbert Swedish Bakery. Our party was seated right away, and the service was excellent. During warmer months many have reported long waits as Luisa’s is a local favorite. We enjoyed an incredible meal of spinach quiche, eggs, Swedish pancakes, Southern Pecan pancakes, and great coffee. The no-frills cafe is charming with cute touches; a real gem!

We stopped in the Swedish bakery attached to the cafe on our way out to pick up some sweets for later. The blueberry coffee cake we enjoyed for breakfast the next morning did not disappoint.

Antique Shopping

After breakfast, we browsed some of the antique stores along Red Arrow Highway.

Harbert Antique Mall

Harbert Antique Mall is a 10-minute drive outside of town, therefore, you’d need to take an UBER or taxi. With Over 50 dealer displays you’ll want to set aside some time here. While there was a considerable selection, I felt things were laid out well and didn’t feel it was over cluttered. There is an abundance of hidden gems inside. I walked away with a stein!

Lakeside Antiques

Lakeside Antiques is 5 miles outside of downtown. My friends and I felt that their offerings were a bit more high end. There are three large buildings with an array of furniture styles and accessories, fine art, European and Americana antiques and more. I scored a cast iron griddle in excellent condition!

I don’t feel one has to be majorly into antiques to enjoy these stores. It’s just fun looking and discussing all of the memories that the pieces recall to mind. I was worn out from all of the visual stimulation and excitement.

New Buffalo, Michigan Breweries

Ghost Isle Brewery

Ghost Isle Brewery and restaurant opened spring of 2019. We popped in for a beer break. The New Buffalo microbrewery overlooks 156 acres of wetlands and focuses on a lighter less bitter style of beer. The Restaurant offers a full menu including, appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and entrees. Also, there’s a covered patio which seats over 100 people with a firepit and lawn for games of cornhole — a fun place to chill once the temperature warms.

Beer Church Brewery

Located inside of an old Methodist church, the recently renovated brewery now seats over 100 people inside and offers Neapolitan pizza, cocktails, and wine in addition to the beer. I love the new vibe!

Lunch at David’s Delicatessen

David’s Delicatessen is open daily for breakfast and lunch. The menu continually changes depending on ingredients received from farms. They’re known for their Reuben sandwiches. Of course, that’s what I tried. There are three variations to choose from on the menu. I stuck with the traditional and devoured it!

After hours, the deli transforms into a pop-up bar The False Front serving specialty cocktails, wine, beer, and light snacks.

Posh offer ladies apparel, jewelry, handbags, footwear, accessories, coats, and more from premium labels like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Armani, Prada, Ann Taylor, Lululemon, DKNY, etc.

Oinks

We wrapped up the day at Oinks, a local favorite serving Sherman’s Ice Cream. Every summer the line to get into this place wraps the building. There’s so much nostalgia within these walls!

I’m already planning the next daycation! My friends and I felt like we were on vacation and while it was only for a day it refreshed my mind and spirit!

What do you like to do during your daycations? Tell me in the comments?
