Exploring Elegance and History: The Downton Abbey Exhibition in Skokie, Illinois

Relive the Crawley family’s history, drama, and fashion when you step into the fascinating world of the Downton Abbey Exhibition at Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center in Skokie, Illinois.  The limited engagement exhibit of the acclaimed British television series, set in a grand English country house during the Edwardian era, is in Chicagoland through March 31, 2024.

The exquisite, self-guided, immersive exhibition is excellently executed and brought to mind numerous reasons why I was hooked on the series about the Crawley family and their servants.  The producers, Imagine Exhibitions, put much thought and detail into the curated display.  I’d recommend at least 90 minutes to go through and savor everything. However, Let me say that you don’t have to be a show fan to enjoy this experience.  My son, who didn’t watch the show, accompanied me and loved it!  He especially appreciated how the exhibit delves into the historical and social context that served as the backdrop for Downton Abbey.

Our VIP tickets included an audio guide with narration by Alastair Bruce, the Historical Advisor for the series.  It was an excellent enhancement to the tour.

The Costumes

The stunning display of original costumes the characters wore throughout the series wowed me!  One of my favorite things about the series was the fashion.  I lived for everything Lady Mary Crawley was serving lookswise. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to examine these lavish gems up close, appreciating the handiwork and attention to detail.  There are over 60 original show costumes on display.  Admire everything from hunting and riding clothes,  day and evening dresses, and impeccably tailored gentlemen’s suits to wedding gowns.  Each garment tells a story of the characters and the evolving fashions of the time.

Immersive Set Recreations

Another highlight is the meticulously recreated sets from the series, including the iconic Crawley family dining room, Mrs. Patmore’s hectic kitchen, Lady Mary’s bedroom, and bustling servants’ quarters, among other behind-the-scenes elements. Through these immersive reconstructions, guests gain a connection and deeper understanding of the diligent attention to detail and historical accuracy that was a hallmark of the series.

As you go through the exhibition, interactive displays and exclusive insights enhance your experience.  They reveal the secrets to bringing Downton Abbey to life.  There are numerous photo ops and opportunities to interact.  Be sure to take the test to see if you have what it takes to work at Downton Abbey.  Much to my surprise, my answers to the interview questions put me as a cook in the kitchen.  I got a nice chuckle from that as I was sure I’d be most qualified as a Lady’s Maid or an Anna.  Donovan would’ve been a valet.

Historical Context

The exhibition offers an informative, in-depth look at the social norms and daily life of the time period. Guests will delve into the shifting social dynamics, technological advancements, and historical events that shaped the era in which the series is set. This will lead to a richer understanding of the world of Downton Abbey and its significance within its historical setting.

The components of the thoughtfully arranged exhibition and insight into the series’ production will surely enhance viewers’ understanding and admiration for the commitment and creativity that brought Downton Abbey to the screen.
