When one mentions Kansas City, Missouri, the Chiefs might quickly come to mind. They’ve won the Super Bowl four times, so it’s understandable. But what about the city itself? More and more people, including me, are discovering and falling in love with this Midwest gem.

It’s only a one-hour flight from Chicago. That’s how long it takes me to walk home from my office in The Loop.
I can’t stop talking about my trip. I found so many reasons to love this city!

Kansas City’s Full of Surprises
Kansas City, Missouri, effortlessly blends rich history with vibrant culture, making it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a unique experience. From its lively jazz scene to mouthwatering cuisine and various activities, it has something for everyone.
Let’s dive into the exciting layers of this Midwestern city.

The Soul of Jazz
One of my most remarkable discoveries was the city’s pivotal role in the evolution of jazz. During the 1930s, Kansas City emerged as a vibrant hub for this musical genre, largely due to political boss Tom Pendergast, who ensured a steady flow of alcohol during Prohibition. As a result, Kansas City became an unparalleled entertainment center during those dry years. It was here that legendary musicians like Charlie Parker and Count Basie left an indelible mark on the jazz scene.

Jazz is not just a genre here; it’s a vital part of the city’s identity. The American Jazz Museum in the historic 18th and Vine District pays homage to this rich musical heritage. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits featuring iconic musicians and catch intimate, live performances from local and national jazz talents at the Blue Room Jazz Club.

Another spot to check out for live jazz is the Green Lady Lounge, a jazz and blues club known for live music and great cocktails. I caught a show there, and the music and vibes were a ten out of ten. I loved the moody decor and atmosphere.

Additional Activities and Unique Experiences

There’s no shortage of adventures in Kansas City. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, home to a stellar collection that spans centuries and cultures. There’s also a nine-hole mini golf course, each hole representing one of the museum’s exhibits.

Sports enthusiasts can enjoy a game at CPKC Stadium, the proud home of the Kansas City Current. Notably, this stadium is the first in the world designed specifically for a women’s professional sports team. Its stunning architecture captivated me, especially the vibrant teal seats. The match itself was exhilarating, and the atmosphere was electric, fueled by passionate and friendly fans. I was captivated by the immense spirit on display and the warm camaraderie shared among everyone in attendance.

Sip and Savor the Best Local Drinks

I was truly impressed by the incredible spots I explored in Kansas City, offering a diverse range of experiences. One highlight was Vine Street Brewing, Missouri’s first Black-owned brewery, where we enjoyed a flight of their exceptional craft beers and took a guided tour. This brewery not only produces outstanding brews but also serves as an inclusive cultural hub that celebrates Kansas City’s rich heritage. With events like music and comedy nights, bingo, and various fun activities, it’s a vibrant gathering place for the community.

Enjoy a distillery experience at J. Rieger & Co. with a unique blend of history and modern craftsmanship. They have a lively massive outdoor garden bar named Electric Park perfect for socializing on a nice day. The bar is named after an amusement park that stood in the same location. It’s said to be the Walt Disney’s original inspiration for Disney World.

For a stunning backdrop to your evening, head to Percheron, located atop the Crossroads Hotel. This rooftop bar boasts breathtaking views of the Kansas City skyline, making it the ideal spot to sip on cocktails while relaxing and soaking in the vibrant cityscape.
