Craft House: Good Beer, Food, and Atmosphere

  Craft House, Chesterton, Indiana

Craft House, Chesterton, Indiana

My family, friends, and I frequent Craft House for various reasons.  If you ask my friend Matt, it’s all about the beer.  He has become the beer connoisseur of our group, lol, (he does have good taste).  While I do enjoy a good beer, I love the food and atmosphere even more.  The restaurant has a good local feel and it’s family friendly.  I always feel welcome and at home there.  The service is great and most of the time, if not every time we are there for dinner, one of the owner’s stops by our table to greet us and see how we are doing.

Craft House offers 17 beers on tap.  They feature many of the big names such as Founders and Lagunitas, while also promoting local Indiana breweries such as 18th St. produced in Hammond, Devils Trumpet Brewery in Merrillville, and Burn ‘Em Brewery in Michigan City.  On my last visit, I had a beer flight that included Robert The Bruce, brewed by 3 Floyd’s Brewery in Munster.  Man, that’s a good beer!  I guess I prefer Scottish Ale.  Every Monday night offers half-off drafts; a perfect time to sample from their beer list.

The menu has something for everyone with every day presenting either a drink or food special.  Some of my appetizer picks would be the Bavarian Pretzels, Battered Pickles, and Pub Chips.  I usually go with the Craft House salad for my meal.  It consists of spring lettuce and romaine mix, goat cheese crumbles, tomatoes, dried cranberries, pecans, and candied bacon tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette then wrapped in a cucumber ring; a pleasing combination. You can also add salmon, chicken, or shrimp for an up-charge.  My husband prefers the ham and cheese or chicken ciabatta sandwich.

Dana, one of the co-owners, encourages visitors to try the shaved prime rib, burger, and especially the Chef’s Recommendation Specials that are highlighted twice a month. Much forethought goes into exactly what’s featured, so it’s a smart choice.  Ken, a co-owner who also runs the kitchen, has 24 years of training and experience while DJ, his head chef, has 18 years of experience.

Other noteworthy things worth mentioning: Craft House has 30 TVs in the building.  So it’s a great place to enjoy any televised sporting event.  It was the place to be during the 2016 World Series.  They also have live acoustic music every Friday or Saturday starting at 9 p.m.

With specials every night of the week it’s a great place to gather without bruising the wallet.

Make sure you check it out on your next visit to Chesterton and if you’re a local and have yet to visit, try it this week.
